Classical Metal
Irradiated by LabRat
More Friday lightweight. The internet has been steadfastly refusing to drop inspiration in my lap, and this was the most interesting thing I came across all day. (Yes, Steve, I’m going to pick our correspondence back up and let you talk me into five thousand words next time, but I needed a cooldown.)
Via Popehat again, whom I really should have blogrolled ages ago, Ask A Real Musician: 5 Classic Male Metal Singers. Just what it says on the tin- a classically trained voice teacher, who by some miracle has never heard any of these guys, reacts to the vocal stylings of Ronnie James Dio, Ozzy Osbourne, and Rob Halford among others. I have minimal knowledge of singing techniques but this was really interesting to me. I’d also really liked to have seen how she reacted to some of the more modern, blacker metal styles- although I seriously doubt she’d approve of the death growl if only because of what it does to the singers over time. I’d particularly have liked to see Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth analyzed- he is VERSATILE.
Phlegmmy, I think you’ll like this.

Wow, that was cool.
And thanks, I haven’t listened to Number of the Beast in too long.

Very cool. I’ve always loved the way Dickinson can spin a lyrical yarn.

Great link! As a former vocal instructor, I can relate to this because it’s often hard for me to listen to a new band or artist without thinking about how much I’d like to have an hour with the singer. Or, like many of these, I try to figure out exactly what the singer’s doing right.

I do, I do, I do like this, and I concur to a stratospheric degree. Correct singing is a delight, regardless of form, and it’s edifying to hear others who know Proper Singing weigh in on an instrument so expertly wielded. Have always loved these particular singers for these very traits.
Thanks for leading me to that sight. I squeed my pants.
*happy sigh*

Michael Åkerfeldt has an amazing voice, it was kind of jarring to hear him talk to the crowd at a concert sounding like Toki from Metalocalypse after a song though.

Interesting read. I’d love to have seen Geoff Tate included.

Bruce Dickinson FTW! I love Iron Maiden so much, mainly because of his singing.
