Grats! Here’s to the Age of Mortals!

  2. Tam Says:

What it means is I need to get a ‘puter with the wheaties to play WoW.

  3. LabRat Says:

The one Stingray built for Spear for the same purpose could be done for under 900 or so…

  4. Marko Kloos Says:

Shit, I did a quad-core rig for Robin that plays WoW on Ultra at 1080p, for right around $600.

    Also? ZOMG NO WAI

  5. Stingray Says:

YAWAI! They said something about nerf and we were all “lolwut” and they said “yarly” and we said “LEEEEEROY!” and then a whole bunch of cultists were out of work.

  6. Old NFO Says:

    You’re right…LOL :-)

  7. Heather Says:

Gratz! Also, Marko, I’d be interested in those specs. It’s hard enough with hubby and I fighting over the one computer that can play on medium that I’m looking to build a second :)

  8. Eric Says:

    Congrats, Labrat and Stingray!!

I am curious to know if you guys went with one tank or two. I had read some guilds were going to one tank to bring an extra DPS.

I also would like to know the specs on the rig that Marko made for his wife, or Stingray made for your friend. I have an AMD quad core box with a 6850, and it does not like much beyond high at 1680 by 1050. Just curious to know if I have messed up the config somehow, or made a boneheaded decision with parts.

  9. LabRat Says:

I’ll let the techies handle the tech, but we two-tanked it, bear and paladin. I think with the sheer number of paladin cooldowns we might have been able to handle the impales with just me, but the tetanus from the Terrors would have murdered me in short order.

We had more than enough DPS as it was, but to make sure we got it pre-nerf we cherry-picked the strongest gear and best class combo we could get out of our two teams. Not sure we’ll ever do that again as it caused a fair amount of resentment (along with a fair amount of support and go-team, reactions were mixed), but it got the job done with a very clean kill.

I have heard that some people found the Spine fight more difficult than Madness. Was that the case for your group?

I have only tried some of Dragon Soul in LFR, as I no longer have the kind of time to raid that I did in Wrath. And the people in LFR are bad enough (attitude more than ability), that I am not sure I want to do that again. In Wrath I did not feel like I was slowing down the people I was running with in the normal raids, but it is likely that would be case the now.

I have groups of friends on two different servers, so I am looking forward to 4.3.2 so that we can form RealID raids and go play in the older instances, like ICC or Ulduar.

  11. Stingray Says:

The one I built for Spear was a core i5 2500k socketed into an asus P8H67-M LE with 8gb of crucial in dual channel, using a coolermaster hyper 212+ instead of the stock sink to bump that k-clock up to a nice conservative 3.8ghz. Video courtesy of a MSI GeForce GTX 560, case, power, hdd, and optical scavenged from the scavenge pile in the closet, and besystemed with windows 7 home premium 64 bit oem.

  12. LabRat Says:

Spine is a hard coordination check. Madness is a hard gear check, and while coordination is definitely required it’s not quite as finely crucial. We cruised past Spine and hung up on Madness until we did the team smush; with nerfs next week probably both teams will get it easily.

We went from a definitely scrubby around the edges but amiable guild with constant roster stress in Wrath to two teams and within the top ten on our server at the end of Cata now. We’re not bragworthy awesome and never will be unless we change some priorities in ways we’d find unacceptable, but it’s been a nice trajectory.

Sadly, all the people I knew on other servers that would have let me do crossrealm raiding have since quit playing… sucks. : /

  13. Eric Says:

Labrat, I know it feels good when you can cruise past the coordination checks. And I am glad to hear that the clear level of progress your guild has made has not resulted in massive levels of stress and drama.

Stingray, thanks for the spec info. I am running an AMD Phenom II 955 Deneb at around 3.2 Ghz and a Ge6850. I was already lloking at bumping RAM from 4 to 8 Gb, I am just curious if you think the bottleneck I am seeing is more likely to be my video card or my CPU.

Thanks to both of your for the useful information and patience! Has Tank reached 100 lbs yet?

  14. Kristopher Says:

Not sure we’ll ever do that again as it caused a fair amount of resentment …

    Yes, it did.

  15. LabRat Says:

    Yes, we know.

  16. Stingray Says:

Eric: Neither one is much belle of the ball these days, as I’m sure you’re aware, but of those I’d look to upgrade the video first.

    Last weigh-in was 75.8 lbs.

  17. Eric Says:

Thanks for the suggestion! I tweaked some settings in WoW last night (like turning on Direct X11 support >> ) and I am going to see how it goes from there. I am think the human error in my settings may have been responsible for the unexpectedly low performance I was seeing.

But I will likely buy another 4 or 8 Gb of RAM. Its not like it will hurt.

  18. Gnarly Sheen Says:

We just killed it for the first time on 25 last week (had it on farm for a few weeks on 10). If for some weird reason anyone wants to see them, I made some kill vids of the fights (10 and 25) for my guild:
    http://www.youtube.com/user/Marbleshade/videos
The fight gets significantly easier once one of your tanks gets their 4-piece bonus. The warrior 4pc allows you to shield wall the raid on every platform (so the whole raid takes 20% less damage from every elementium blast). Honestly felt like the only thing the encounter required was sufficient raid cooldowns during the blast+impale+crush combo.

Now you get to laugh at how ridiculously easy Heroic Morchok is :)

  19. Leit Says:

    Nice.

Being on an EU realm, we’ve got one more night to get this prenerf. Going for it tonight… all or nothing, 1 tank, 2 heals, 7 deeps. Unfortunately we don’t have the depth to cherry-pick… we’re a casual regional guild. Been hitting a wall at this fight for the past 3 weeks or so.

Eric: next patch gives us an x64 binary. If you have a 64 bit system then that’ll likely be worth a small boost if you get more RAM. Until then it isn’t likely to matter much unless you’re healing ICC-style. (wow on one screen, HD anime on the other)

  20. Eric Says:

    Leit,

I had seen that the 64 bit client should be landing this week, and I was planning on giving it a try.

So far my performance seems better now that turned on Direct X11 support. I also boosted the CPU speed a touch and looked into a regedit to prevent core parking. If the x64 client seems to run better I may invest in more RAM to see if that helps a bit more also. We will see.

I tanked in ICC so even as a Pally tank in Wrath I could not watch Anime while doing my job.

  21. Leit Says:

Hmm, WoW’s still behind the times in terms of using more than one core. I see the x64 client caused some chaos in the US… we haven’t even seen a release for EU yet.

Didn’t mean any offense by my anime comment. :D

We did get our kill an hour into raid time the night before the nerf as well. /flex
