Everyone Likes Puppies

I am currently feeling Funky in a way that either announces an odd allergy attack or presages the onset of a virus. Either way my powers of concentration are notably reduced and my patience in scanty supply, so today you get puppy pictures.

Most really young puppies need a heat source, a lamp or a pad. It took a night and a day of unexplained crying to learn that what these two really wanted was a heat sink. As you can see they snuggle up to it, happy as harp seals on an ice floe.

It’s apparently best if you belly right up to it. Oooh, yeah.

The piglets at one week old. They’re a little bigger now than they were in the first photo.

Like mother…

…Like offspring.

Hope you feel better, Ms. LabRat.
I’m afraid my true reaction to the beautiful, lovely puppy photos was not in English. It went something like this:
    Ooooowooozzzuuuufurryfuzzbucketttzucutzzuufuzzifuzziwiddlebitzyizzybizzyfuzzuwuzzicus!

Thank you! I love my cat very much but puppy pictures are always gold.

    Liquid cooled pups! Awesome.

Care to share some info on that whelping box? We use a repurposed kiddie pool with old carpet for padding, and there will be another litter in January.

  6. LabRat Says:

Marko- I got it at Breeder Base, since as the due date rushed forward we found ourselves seriously short of time for a build project. It’s not cheap but so far I’ve found it pretty good value for money, as it’s lightweight, safe, and very easy to clean and set up little areas in.

  7. Farmmom Says:

Adorable! I have been waiting with bated breath for pictures but didn’t want to bug. As for the little critters and the heat sink…. if I had that much fur going on in this weather I would want one too!

  8. Janeen Says:

This is a rather nice demonstration of why prescriptive laws for dog breeding are an abysmally bad idea.

An environment that’s perfectly healthy for, say, Chinese Cresteds could be potentially lethal for a litter of Akitas. And vice-versa.

One size does not fit all no matter how good the intentions behind it are.

  9. Tam Says:

Stingray’s been overclocking the dogs again?

  10. Old NFO Says:

Very nice! :-) Hope you’re feeling better too!

  11. Matt Says:

Be careful. If the response to “LabRat is getting sick” is “puppy pictures on atomicnerds.com”…well, you won’t have too many people wishing for you to be healthy, ya know? :)

Also, Tam wins teh intarwebz this week.

    *zerberts puppies*

    *sneezes dog fur*

Ok, not the best idea I’ve ever had…

  13. Kristopher Says:

Swamp coolers are fairly cheap, use little electricity, and their humidification habit is no big deal in an arid climate.

Here is a $13 DIY project:

  14. LabRat Says:

Tam: Stingray is not overclocking the puppies. I am.

  15. Samantha K Says:

You’ve already turned me into a total jackass over the pups..so I might as well publicly SQUEE.

    I hope you’re happy.

    Lo Tek puppy cooling:

-Freeze water in 2 liter bottle, wrap in towel, place with puppies. Puppies can snuggle if warm, move away when cool.

-Same as above but with refrigerated water. Frozen lasts longer.

No Electricity Lo Tek puppy cooling:

-Replace part of blankets in whelping box with linoleum or other smooth easily cleaned surface. Puppies will move off blankets onto cooler surface when warm.

-Wet dishrag and wring out until just damp. Whirl around your head a couple times to cool. Spread in whelping box. Watch puppies crawl over to towel. Repeat when towel becomes warm.

    -Mist puppies with spray bottle.

Any of the above can be combined with a fan for Medium Tek puppy cooling.
