Damn Lazy Kids
Irradiated by Stingray
There’s just no work ethic anymore, I tell you. The last couple days we’ve been getting calls that show up as Out of Area on the caller ID. The last couple happened at inopportune times to find out who was engaged in annoying us at the time*, but today’s happened with nothing else going on, so what the hell, right? So I answer.
“Hello?”
“{clicking noise followed by extended silence. More than the usual extended silence from the robo-router}”
“Ok, I’ll just sit here till you get bored, that’ll be fun.”
“Hello, I’m calling from some organization or other to gather opinions from New Mexico voters, and would like to know if you would participate in our survey?”
“And who’s funding this survey?”
“I’m sorry, sir. They don’t tell me that in order to prevent bias.”
“Oh, don’t worry. It’s still biased. So which way will you be pushing my answers so I-”
“*click*”
Lazy little shit.
*If your call comes in right after the raid pulled the boss, you get the answering machine if you’re lucky, the fax machine if I have a spare GCD.

Funny, I always get stonewalled when I ask who is paying for the survey too. I detect a pattern here.

I don’t even worry about bias, I just figure that they’re fishing for personal information.
“And would you say you favor a repeal of the estate tax, ma’am? Hmm, very interesting. Now just for verification of your survey results, what is your mother’s maiden name and the last four digits of your social security number?”

The last survey call I got, I was actually in enough of a mood to do the survey.
The gal running the questions thought it was amusing when I commented “well, it’s obvious which way this is push-polling”.

I do the surveys, too, but I lie. Particularly about my ethnicity. I mean, Inuits are under-represented in Ohio, I want to do my part.

In telemarketing, the surveyor would be commended for their reaction. If the call is a possible waste, you drop the line and move on in telemarketing. If you get slammed, you’re thankfull to have the opportunity to find another willing participant in the shortest time possible.
