To-Do

To borrow a concept from Roberta, and also to give myself a little reminder list about things I plan to do, the current state of the to-do list.

- How stuff works: your metabolism and you. No diet and exercise and this-is-healthy stuff, just the nuts and bolts of what the food is made of, what hardware and software you have to process it with and where it goes and how it’s used. Rather boring for me to write due to density, but evidently there is a desire for this sort of bare bones written readably without a sales pitch on the side.

- Evolution, yay: Why on earth do human women go through menopause, otherwise known as “This is probably not the end of the question you should be starting from”.

- Game review: Mass Effect 2. May not bother with this one, as it’s fairly similar to the Mass Effect review except they fixed most of the annoyances. Will consist mainly of “SQUEE I LOVE THIS GAME” if written.

- Fiction rant: the Sherlock Holmes universe and certain consistent trends in adaptation decay. If I’m fortunate will turn into a longer discussion on how we as a culture handle cerebral characters.

- Fiction rant: the scarcity of normal, stable relationships in mainstream fiction. Intense and lifelong bonds of friendship are not only permissible but admirable, but in romantic pairings couples who somehow remain in relationships despite apparently neither liking nor trusting one another are the norm. (Yes, I know the basic reason why this is- easy and continuously milked source of conflict to move the plot along or create B-plot fireworks- but it’s still lazy writing and lots of other forms of similarly motivated lazy writing are less common.)

I know this isn’t how this works, but can I vote to see the Sherlock rant? I’d love to get your take on that.

PS I continue to think that the most stable, healthy marriage in a TV drama is that between Principal and Coach Taylor on Friday Night Lights. Just putting that out there.

If it gives you any extra motivation, I’m very much looking forward to the metabolism rant. (You’d probably guessed that.)

  3. Tracie Says:

Gah, SB7 stole my stable marriage in pop culture example. Another - Bernard and Rose from “Lost.”

I look forward to reading that one. How about an off-shoot: depictions of doofus husbands with beautiful, put-together wives and snarky children. The men are always incompetent.

  4. Christina LMT Says:

Nice! Looking forward to your in-depth looks at these topics. Of course, if you read romance, you get the happily-ever-after…then again, you rarely see sequels to those novels!

Oh, check your email. I sent Stingray a pic, since he’s such a whiny titty-baby about picture size. :D

  5. Al Terego Says:

Riffing off your list, if I might suggest an addition:

    - Reality rant: the scarcity of normal…

Problematic definitions aside, that one’s got tangents and dimensions out the ying-yang; love to see a few of yours.

Looking forward to the fiction rants. When you do the relationships one - there have been a few happily married heroes, but they rarely seem to have kids in fiction. If a child is born, usually that seems to mean that one of the spouses is about to die in the near future. Or they’ll lose the child at some point. The rarest beast seems to be a hero, or heroine, who not only is in a stable marriage but also has a well-adjusted child or children.

  7. Amy Says:

Ooooooh, I’d like the see the one on Sherlock Holmes and the scarcity of normal, healthy relationships. However, in terms of stable, healthy marriages on TV, try Peter and Elizabeth Burke on White Collar on USA.

  8. LabRat Says:

Peter and Elizabeth are actually my current favorite of TV that’s still running… and I might have to check out Friday Night Lights.

My very favorites ever ever are actually Gomez and Morticia Addams, who not only meet the “stable, supportive, and affectionate marriage” criteria, but also have children. Nothing ELSE about any universe involving the Addams family is normal, but underneath the gothic trappings it’s one of the happiest families in fiction.

  9. Tam Says:

My very favorites ever ever are actually Gomez and Morticia Addams…

Secret Dating Criteria: I think the first two Addams Family movies are just some of the most romantic movies ever. When I say that to someone and they don’t get it, we’re probably not on the same wavelength.

    “Unhappy darling?”

    “Oh, yes… completely.”

  10. Dominique Says:

I’d like to submit another vote for the Sherlock Holmes rant, if possible.
