Myopic Fail

The frame on my glasses snapped this afternoon. I can more or less see to more or less type, but I can’t really read what I’m typing unless I lean in like Mr. Magoo. Unfortunately, after years of nigh-invincible titanium frames, I forgot the “nigh” part and neglected to leave a back-up pair in any easily found location.

Jury-rigged repairs are in progress and hopefully I can get a new pair quickly. Until then if you’re hearing from either of us it probably won’t be me.

ETA: frames epoxied and glasses mostly functional. We’ll see if the smudge on the lens of the repaired side is a real problem or no. Unfortunately, if we could lay hands on tix, we would have gone that route- I’m sure there’s tons of it up here, just all ordered through the lab for such projects. I’ll get my eyes re-examined on Monday and see if I’m eligible for Lasik, and in the meantime use TD’s link to order some backups.

Lasers. You can pay for them with pre-tax money from a medical flexplan if you have one. Budget the cost of it in the plan over the whole year, and have the surgery in January.

Only downside is needing reading glasses once you get well past 40.

Not good, hope you get them fixed/new ones soon! I keep my old pairs in “strategic” locations just in case…

Tix, the hardest soft solder on the planet — and how I fix my glasses. Just sayin’.

Also, I keep backups handy, since I can’t even walk to the supermarket without them….

So I don’t need to be embarrassed for not reaming and re-tapping the screw channel in my foxtrot-uniform sunglasses? Sweet!

Best of luck with your own optical doohickies; I’m on the verge of needing corrective somethingerother myself, and about 40% still in denial. Maybe I’ll just buy a CNC mill. That’d be a shit-ton more fun than visiting an opthamologist.

This is one of the big reasons why I wear contacts. I trash glasses way too quickly. Hell, I wear my current pair less than a few hours a day on average, and I still managed to break them once (luckily I was able to order a replacement temple arm).

I remember having to solder a pair together to get by for the week until a new pair could be ordered back when I was in junior high and my eyesight was changing too quickly for me to have a good pair of backups around (I’m extremely myopic, plus I have astigmatism). One of the lenses looked like someone had took a blow torch to a portion of it, and they tended to fall a part of you looked at ‘em funny. XD

After more than 30 years wearing glasses to the point of (-8) in one eye and not much better in another I finally went for corrective laser. If you decide to go Lasic route, you might find my experiences useful.
[type “lasic” in the search window, there are few of them]

Bottom line: I regret I didn’t do it earlier; although I’d prefer my doctor gaining working experience all those years while I was undecided…

you mean you don’t have the mass of white tape covering the bridge of your glasses already? UN-possible I say!
