Go thee forth and read the whole thing.

Yes! “Grass eater” is going to replace “gunsel” now in my vocabulary. LOVE it.

  2. Kristopher Says:

    Erm?

Gunsel is just a term describing sexual orientation. Not exactly relevant, I think?

  3. Richard Says:

Possibly, the term originated in Larry Niven’s science fiction. The K’zin are obligate carnivores and extremely contemptuous of any species that would eat vegetable matter under any circumstances. The usage was very similar.

  4. SmartDogs Says:

Interesting. I wasn’t aware of either of those definitions. As I understand it *Gunsel* is a term in Parelli Natural Horsemanship for a person who doesn’t know much about horses, regularly goes beyond his limits and is like to get himself killed or injured because of his stupid behavior.

IOW - a “grass eater” who works with horses.

  5. bluntobject Says:

The Wiktionary entry for ‘gunsel’ confused me even further.

Incidentally, I got “grass-eater” from John Farnam. Farnam has replaced it with “Victim-By-Choice” (usually “VBC”) specifically to avoid irritating proto-gunnies who happen to be vegetarian.

  6. SmartDogs Says:

Cripes - so now political correctness now invades terms for dimwits, criminals, meat-eaters, gun slingers, those who partake in anal sex and horse owners?

What IS the world coming to?

  7. Stingray Says:

SmartDogs: The world is coming to a place where it drives more and more people to the position I’ve taken for quite a while: “If you don’t like my term for your group/clique/whatever, have a nice steaming cup of go fuck yourself, probably with a dessert of grow a sense of humor god dammit!”

  8. HTRN Says:

I too, always considered “gunsel” to mean somebody, usually nefarious, packing heat. The movie the Maltese Falcon, for instance, has Sam Spade(Humphrey Bogart) calling “Wilmer”(Elisha Cook jr.) a gunsel.

  9. georgeh Says:

    I’ve considered using
    “Speaker To Vegans”
    as a screen name.

  10. Williiam the Coroner Says:

Yes, Wilmer is the archtypical gunsel, the Ur-gunsel. The person packing heat, and who most importantly, likes to shoot people.
