Get your fill of marvelous me over at Marko’s today. (Yes, “whiterat” is still me. For some reason “LabRat” is already taken as a WordPress username. I can’t imagine why.)

This is one for those who like my dog thinkypieces…

Nice article! Re. your point on toy breeds being tolerable if treated well, when I was young my grandparents had (among others) a bichon frise. He was the best hiker of the pack. I have some fond memories of eating lunch on summits in the high Sierras, seeing some hard-bodied athletes come over the rise, watching their faces fall as they realize that the acme of their day’s accomplishment is occupied by a septegenarian, an eight-year-old and a puffy white marshmallow dog.

Ha! We got a good chuckle out of that.

I’ve liked just about every Bichon I’ve met so far- they seem to have weathered being small and cute well, health and temperament-wise.

Very interesting post at MW. As it happens, I am currently in the process of getting a Havanese, but only after eliminating many of the other possible breeds for the reasons you discuss. The breeding focus on appearance has really damaged a lot of dogs.

Havanese are just being “discovered” by small-dog people- them and Lowchens. Which means they’re fine NOW…
