The lights in my apartment amount to about five 18-watt CFLs. I could save 0.09 kWh, and thus save the world.

(Yeah, I know the point is probably to raise "awareness" or whatever, but I'm pretty sure 98% of participants are going to stop at the free, convenient, and highly visible part of this. Lights off for an hour, congratulations, you've done your Earth Deed for the year.)

As part of my commitment to sustainable living, renewable energy, and the fight against waste and overconsumption, I'm going to drop everything and argue vociferously on the internet in favour of Formula One's adoption of KERS for the 2009 season. The success of this pivotal technology in a highly competitive and demanding motorsports environment is critical to its wide adoption in passenger and commercial vehicles beyond smug-burning hippie chariots like the Prius, so anything I can do to improve its visibility among the public is vital.

Arguing on the internet being what it is, this may take a while. Probably at least an hour.

Most people love the idea of being green and living sustainably -- until it involves any kind of significant effort or sacrifice on their part.

You've gotta wonder how many bulbs blew, that will need to be replaced, when they switched on again at the end of the hour. I'll put money on the fix-cost being several times the hour-outage cost.
